Social Stories

Social Stories

,A social story is a short, personalized, and visually supported narrative developed by Carol Gray in the 1990s to help individuals, particularly those with neurodiversity or autism, understand and navigate specific social situations, routines, or expectations. They are designed to reduce anxiety by providing clear, descriptive, and positive information about who is involved, what to expect, and why, fostering better social understanding.

We are starting to build a bank of useful social stories here for you to use with your child – if you need something that isn’t listed here, a quick internet search might help you find what you are looking for or you could drop us an email and we will see what we can do to help.

Here’s how to get started using social stories with your child:

1: Print your social story. You could consider laminating it, printing it on card, cutting it up into smaller chunks like cue cards that you might use for revision, making it into a comic with the help of your child and much more! You could even try using AI to create a more visual version. We would love to see your attempts!

2: Read the social story with your child regularly in the build up to the event. This can be anywhere, anytime!

3: You may also consider role-playing the scenario after reading the social story.

4: Continue to re-read the story as needed to recap the upcoming event you want your child to learn more about to help them feel prepared.
