Transition

Transition

The charity Young Minds have lots of great resources on their website, mostly relating to transition from primary to secondary but lots of it useful more generally too. This poster below has lots of hints and tips and you can find out more by visiting the Young Minds website.

This year, we have been working on how to use social stories to support pupils when anxious about something or to help them prepare for a change or a new adventure. The Y4, 5 and 6 teachers have written social stories to support new pupils joining their class next year and the Y3 teachers have written one to support current Y2 pupils to prepare for transition day. There will be one coming soon for starting in September too.

Here’s how to get started using social stories with your child:

#1: Download the social story correct social story for your child’s class teacher next year (If this is a strategy that works well for your child, you can also find many different examples of social stories for other situations online).

#2: Print your social story. You could consider laminating it, printing it on card, cutting it up into smaller chunks like cue cards that you might use for revision, making it into a comic with the help of your child and much more! You could even try using AI to create a more visual version. We would love to see your attempts!

#3: Read the social story with your child regularly in the build up to the event. This can be anywhere, anytime!

#4: You may also consider role-playing the scenario after reading the social story.

#5: Continue to re-read the story as needed to recap the upcoming event you want your child to learn more about to help them feel prepared.
